“They’re helping us stay connected in a way words no longer can,” says wife of resident at Brooklands

Brooklands’ Namaste Care sessions help residents with dementia reconnect with loved ones through calming sensory activities

The Namaste Care sessions at Brooklands are keeping residents connected with their loved ones.

The sessions use sensory-based activities designed to bring peace, stimulation and emotional connection, particularly for those living with dementia.

One resident, John, has shown noticeable signs of relaxation and emotional comfort during the sessions – a response that has only deepened since his wife began joining him.

“John seems to find the sessions very calming,” said wife Lin.

“He enjoys seeing the sea life and birds projected on the ceiling and particularly responds to the bird songs, maybe because they bring back memories of our garden.

“When I massage his hands – just like I used to do at home – he often drifts off to sleep. The peaceful atmosphere, the gentle sounds, and the one-to-one contact all seem to help him relax in a way that’s deeply familiar.

“It means so much to be able to share these moments with John. Even if he can’t say much, I can tell he feels safe and cared for.

“The Namaste Care sessions are helping us stay connected in a way that words no longer can.”

The home, which specialises in dementia care, plans to expand the Namaste Care programme, seeing it as an essential part of their commitment to person-centred, compassionate care.

Each session is carefully designed to provide a holistic sensory experience, from soft lighting and soothing music to hand massages with personalised creams and sounds of the sea to create happy memories and comfort.

John’s individual Namaste Care bag includes family photos, a CD of his favourite music, and his personal hand cream.

“We are always looking for things that can have a positive impact in our home and these sessions have done just that,” said lifestyle coordinator Laure.

“Namaste Care sessions give residents the chance to experience a deep sense of peace and comfort.

“Having Lin with us has made a visible impact – not only does it strengthen their bond, but it also brings familiarity and love.

“Seeing how John responds to these sessions has been wonderful to see and the whole team has been genuinely touched by their connection.”
